Accountability as a Concept
- Accountability can broadly be considered as ‘how you ensure and demonstrate responsible action.
- Accountability is usually considered ‘ex-poste’ as people tend to think about reporting and holding people to account after events have happened
- It can be helpful, however, to consider accountability ‘ex-ante’. When we do this we create mechanisms and tools in advance of events, such as standards and commitments. This can be helpful as then people know in advance what they will be held accountable for. This helps with transparency and improving the standard of work
